All potential future Nutrition Programming Volunteers are required to complete an orientation which is a general overview of expectations when volunteering and covering information about nutrition classes offered including, Cooking Matters as well as MyPlate Workshops. The orientation does NOT count as volunteer hours, and must be completed prior to signing up as a volunteer for any nutrition classes in the community, along with a few other requirements that are outlined in the orientation such as:
-MUST be 18 years or older
- Complete volunteer application
-Complete civil rights training
- background check required prior to volunteering
The 1.5 hour orientation is an overview of the programs which offer volunteer opportunities and DOES NOT COUNT AS VOLUNTEER HOURS
Join for an virtual orientation via Zoom to learn about how to help our Nutrition Services Team provide education on nutrition, culinary skills, food budgeting and food safety to agency clients by serving as a chef, nutrition educator, grocery shopper or classroom manager.
Nutrition programming schedules for volunteers offer opportunities to assist with both Cooking Matters classes, and other Nutrition Workshops which include nutrition/cooking education. Classes may take place either in person or virtually.
Volunteer REQUIREMENTS include:
- Chef instructors: teach about basic culinary skills, food safety and other food tips through a cooking demo.
- Should have formal culinary education/training, food industry background, chef experience
- Some culinary students that have completed several classes may fill this role
- Nutrition instructors: teach basic nutrition principles in an interactive manner.
- Should have formal nutrition education
- Registered Dietitians preferred
- Grocery Shoppers: shop for and purchase ingredients needed for our cooking demos and grocery handouts.
- Volunteers often come from a variety of different backgrounds
- Be able to transport groceries
- Classroom Managers: ensure order in classroom; assist in all aspects of class (set-up, clean-up, etc.)
- Perfect for those wanting to observe a class before becoming an instructor
- Should be willing to take initiative
- Must be able to get to and from classes
