Description:  Volunteer as an individual and help us sort, bag, and box Produce for hungry North Texans in a refrigerated warehouse environment while working cooperatively with other volunteers and staff.  The produce will need to be checked for quality and restacked. Some cleaning may be asked of the volunteers. Volunteers will be lifting 40-50 pound boxes/bags repeatedly throughout the entire shift.  

Age Requirements: According to safety guidelines, all attendees must be 16 years of age or older. 

Attire:  Closed-toe, non-slip shoes are required (no sandals or flip flops). Shoes with rubber soles are recommended. Items that are not appropriate include revealing clothing or dangling accessories. Volunteers who do not wear or bring proper attire will be turned away.

The Distribution Center posts an entire month's calendar one month in advance on the first business day of the month. Once a shift is full, it will disappear from the calendar.  

This opportunity takes place at our Distribution Center, which is located at 3677 Mapleshade Lane, Plano, TX 75075.

Volunteers will work in our climate-controlled warehouse with other volunteers and staff. This opportunity requires standing, lifting, and bending. While most volunteers will lift 1 to 15 pounds, some tasks could require lifting up to 30-pounds.  

All volunteers must be signed up for the specific shift. We do not accept walk-ins.  

Age Requirements: Volunteers must be at least 12 years old on the day of the volunteer service. Volunteers who are 12 – 15 are required to have a chaperone who is at least 18 years old who takes legal responsibility for the minor. Volunteers who are 16 and older do not need a chaperone. NTFB does not provide chaperones. A chaperone can chaperone up to three minors. The chaperone is also required to create a volunteer account and sign up for the shift. The chaperone is required to volunteer alongside the minor. Chaperones are not allowed to sit in the orientation room or lobby while the minor volunteers. 

Children under the age of 12 may not volunteer or come with their parent/guardian to sit in the lobby during the shift.

The warehouse is climate-controlled. Items that are not appropriate include revealing clothing or dangling accessories. You will be unable to keep a bag(including a fanny pack or belt bag) on your person during the shift. Lockers are available to store away personal belongings.

Group or Teams: Groups of up to 25 are welcome to volunteer for this opportunity. Every person must be signed up on the portal as part of the team. Groups are not guaranteed to stay together during the shift. Instructions on how to sign up as a group can be found here.  

Any unfilled spots on a team are released 10 calendar days before the shift date.  

Groups cannot cater or bring food to consume before or after the shift. Additionally, we do not have space that can be used for meetings or meals. There are several restaurants in the area that can accommodate groups of all sizes. You can find our recommendations here.

Time Commitment: The shift is 2.5 hours in length. Due to the nature of the opportunity, we ask that volunteers participate for the entirety of the shift. Check-in begins 30-minutes before the shift time. Morning shift check-in begins at 8:30am for the morning shift and afternoon shift check-in begins at 12:30pm. Lobby doors open at 8:30am. Orientation begins promptly at the shift start time. We have a 10-minute grace period. Any volunteer arriving after 9:10am or 1:10pm will not be able to stay to volunteer. Weather Cancellation: If there is a 50% or higher chance of rain or any chance of severe weather or icy walkways, the Seasonal Gardening volunteer shift will be cancelled to ensure the safety of volunteers; those who have signed up will be notified by email the day before.

Big Tex hosts our largest canned food drive of the year, and we need your help! This is the most popular event of the year, and spots will fill up quickly! The North Texas Food Bank is the beneficiary of weekly promotions at the State Fair of Texas. 

All food collected is distributed within our Feeding Network to feed neighbors across North Texas! 

 
Groups: You are unable create a team and reserve spots for others. You are welcome to volunteer with a group, but each team member will need to sign up individually for the shift(s). Only one person from the group needs to attend orientation, but every volunteer needs to complete the orientation RSVP. At orientation, you can ask to be assigned to a gate with others. Groups larger than 3 individuals are not guaranteed to be assigned to the same gate. 

Description: 

Parking and Transportation:

Parking passes will be available for volunteers for only one parking lot. Volunteers will have to walk from the parking lot to their assigned gate - this could be up to a mile. Parking passes for handicap or premium lots are not provided. Please allow extra time to walk to your gate from the parking lot. The Dart is another great option to get to the Fair. The Dart Train drops off at one of the entrances to the gate. 

Orientation: 

All volunteers must attend an orientation prior to their volunteer shift at the State Fair of Texas. For a group of volunteers, one person may attend the orientation on behalf of the group. All volunteers need to complete the orientation RSVP link you receive in your email. The one person attending the orientation will need to know the t-shirt size and the transportation method of each volunteer in the group. 

Orientation will include pick-up of your volunteer T-shirt, gate assignment, and parking information. The first three evening orientations are scheduled for 1.5 hours, but are not likely to last that long(it is dependent on the number of people at the orientation). Orientation will be held at NTFB Perot Family Campus(3677 Mapleshade Ln. Plano, TX 75075) in Plano on the following days and times: 

Monday, Sept. 14: 6:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. 

Monday, Sept. 21: 12:00 p.m.(noon) to 1 p.m. 

Tuesday, Sept. 22: 6:00 p.m .to 7:00 p.m. 

Wednesday, Sept. 23: 5:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. 

Monday, Sept. 28: 6:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. 

Monday, Oct. 5: 6:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. 

After you have you registered for a shift, an NTFB Staff Member will send you an email with a link to RSVP for an orientation date. The link will be sent twice a week. If someone is attending the orientation on your behalf, you will still complete the RSVP form.  

Age Requirement: Volunteers must be 18 years of age or older to volunteer. 

Time Commitment: Thank you for respecting other volunteers and the NTFB team by arriving at the agreed upon time. If you cannot stay the entirety of the shift, please do not sign up.

Age Requirements: According to safety guidelines, all attendees must be 12 years of age or older. All attendees must be registered for the volunteer event, both chaperones and youth. Chaperones are required to volunteer with the minor; the chaperone cannot sit in the volunteer orientation room. 

Volunteers ages 12-15 require at least one adult chaperone per 3 youth.

Chaperone must be 18 years old and take legal responsibility for the minor. NTFB does not provide chaperones. 

Volunteers ages 16+ do not require chaperone.
